WHO IS SARA GREEN?

for Transylvania County Schools Board of Education

For Sara Green, a native of Pennsylvania who settled in Transylvania County as an adult, a close-knit community isn’t solely made up of a shared place, past and traditions. The social fabric of a thriving community is continuously reinforced by adding strands of new learning and weaving in different experiences to support the social fabric that makes up the next generation of leaders, employers, employees and parents.

Transylvania County, in Green’s eyes, comes very close to this ideal. “There is so much love and good here. You can see it in the number of nonprofits, art and music making, education, love of history and place, and the camaraderie of those fortunate to live here,” she says. “There truly is magic in these mountains.”

The 46-year-old mother of three is an avid maker, who might be familiar to many as the parent at the rock gym, baseball field or dance studio, hands always busy knitting or crocheting. Describing herself as someone who wants to understand how things work, combined with her involvement in PTOs and community groups centering on health, creativity and parenting, Green appreciates how textured and multi-layered a community must be to benefit as many of its members as possible.

Before moving to Transylvania County, Green was an educator, following in the footsteps of her father and grandmother. Her teaching background spans from American Sign Language interpretation, Algebra, Geometry, and Special Education to Project-Based Learning.  Her  passion for education didn’t stop when she  left the classroom.  After starting her family, Green continued to work as a creator and writer of interactive math lessons for a national textbook company. Her work was coincidentally used in Transylvania County Schools (some may recognize her voice from videos.) She also remained active in early education and with homeschooling groups. Green describes herself as having an intrinsic curiosity, a love for learning, and awe and respect for the world around us.

Green, together with her spouse, Tim, settled in Brevard after growing up in Florida. In the eight years that she and her family have lived in Brevard, she  has worked for and served on the board of The Family Place, taught at Mountain Sun and Blue Ridge Community College, and built a tight network of friends through shared interests in health, creativity and lifelong learning experiences. On a perfect day, Green sees herself somewhere in the woods on a hike along with some healthy conversation with family and friends. Tim, a self-employed sales consultant, might be nearby on his mountain bike.

Tim and Sara are raising three children: a ninth grader at Brevard High School, a sixth grader at Brevard Middle School and a fourth grader at Brevard Elementary School. The two sisters and their middle brother are active in everything from rock climbing, dance, arts, softball, chess, and baseball to music. Together with a flock of chickens, Blaze, the loving lunatic dog and Theo, the very handsome and patient family cat, their household is a lively place where education is a central topic on a daily basis.

Green, who in her professional life keeps the finances adding up at Food Matters Market, is excited and energized at the opportunity to campaign for a seat on the Transylvania Board of Education. “I see our community rallying around a re-imagined culture of what education can look like. Place-based, real-world programming that promotes both challenge and joy in learning,” Green says. “I see a healthy ecosystem of school and community working together. I see myself as a member of the school board committed to elevating students to develop character and contribute to a more equitable world.”

This might sound like a tall order, but judging by how her friends describe her, Green is well prepared and temperamentally suited for the job she is vying for. Words like passionate, hard-working, visionary, knowledgeable in all areas of education and an outside-of-the-box thinker along with resolution-finder and a genuine, outspoken advocate for children and families, reverberate through comments solicited from a dozen friends who responded to a text within minutes and without hesitation. “She’ll be an incredible candidate for our school board,” is how one of her many close Brevard friends and fellow public school parent, Lauren Hufnagel, puts it.

“Putting myself in a position to speak up for the integrity of our public schools feels like a natural fit for me,” Green says. “If we don’t shift the trajectory, the availability of a high-quality, relevant education for every student will be a thing of the past.”
